Biography

1954- Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. Chinese Hokkien/ Hakka parentage. Peranakan and Filipino heritage.

1973- Graduated GCE A-Levels- St Thomas’ School, Kuching

1980- Received BA/BArch in Architecture- University of Nottingham, England (Apprenticed in architecture under Tony Short & Partners, England)

1980- Architectural Assistant, James McArtney Partnership

1982- Associate Professor School of Architecture, National University of Singapore (NUS)

1983- Started NUS’ Computer Committee

1984- Consultant, Edwin Choo & Partners

1985- Set up NUS’ Computer Suite

1985- Started NUS’ first international conference, The Architects Computer

1991- Received PhD in Design Creativity, Harvard University

1995- Brought to Asia for the first time, the Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) Futures international conference.

1997- Collaborated to set up CAAD Research in Asia (CAADRIA)

1997- Convened MOU between NUS School of Architecture and MIT to develop the Global Design Studio

1998- Head of NUS, School of Architecture

1998- Founding Director, Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA)

2000- Board Member of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore

2001- Director, One Marina Property Services, Singapore

2002- Founding Executive Director, Design Singapore, Singapore Ministry of Information, Communications & Arts

2002- MICA Fellow

2003- Board Member of the Land Transport Authority, Singapore

2008- Member of the World Economic Forum, Global Agenda Council on the Design of Complex Systems

2009- Senior Advisor and Jury Member of Denmark’s INDEX Award
